Appalachian Folk and Heritage Conference
2017 appalachian folk and heritage conference will take place march 18th, 2017
at Raceland High school's
cultural arts center (CAC)
The Appalachian Folk and Heritage Conference is an exploration and discussion of the culture and heritage of Appalachia in our community. Located in the John P. Stephens Cultural Arts Center at Raceland-Worthington High School in Raceland, Kentucky. The one day conference will begin and 9am on Saturday, March 18th and should run past 1pm. The event is free and open to the public.
We are excited to talk, share, and learn about our Appalachian past and to discuss our Appalachian future. The Conference hopes to appeal to a wide variety of folk who are interested in the traditions and history of our area, as well as looking towards our sustainable future in Appalachia. We hope to cover new ground as well as explore familiar paths and hopefully provide new insight into our community and our way of life. Our goal is not to have a stuffy academic debate, but rather a real conversation about the history and issues of our area.
The Tri-State Area Seed Savers will be on hand to discuss heirloom seed saving and have a Seed Swap. We will be showing films from Appalshop as well as celebrating the sights and sounds of local artisans and craftspeople. Please see our Conference Agenda for more information.
We're excited that the lobby area of our Conference Center will be holding a variety of educational and entertaining folks. There will be traditional craft demonstrations as well as booths set up by the Boyd County and Greenup County Master Gardeners.
Last year we were featured in a lot of local press including the Ashland Daily Independent, Greenup News-Times, Greenup & Ashland Beacon. We have also had a full length features in the Huntington Herald-Dispatch which you can read here and here.
